Yes to all of that. No car until 71. No air conditioning until my parents in 72 got one window air conditioning that was rarely used. No garage. My Dad put up a metal shed with several hundred screws to fasten, and said he was never going to do that again. Two summer vacations that involved any travel.
We were very happy, which demonstrates to me that having lots of stuff has little to do with happiness.
My grandfather had one of the eariest 8mm camera’s made. My dad followed suit, bought a camera and made home movies as well. Every so often mom and dad would put up the movie screen and pop the corn. We laughed and poked fun at each other as we recalled some moments and we’re amazed at other moments caught by my grandfather.
We had quite a collection of reels, and threading the projector was an art form.
Great times. Good fun. Blessed family.
One of grampa’s 8mm movies captured Grandma praying a rosary and at each Ave she moved her knees up another step. The stairway lead to a hugh Cross in the Woods.
Later I found out that each Ave was for one of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and children. This shrine is beautiful and I’ve enclosed a small link regarding it’s beginnings. I hope you find it interesting;

Yes I do wish life was slower and simpler. My third child asks me about pre-phone days and she seems to imagine it was happier times. It was.
Non-cell-phone days are there for the taking!
“Non-cell-phone days are there for the taking!”
Not if you have a family, a business, children and general responsibilities in modern society. But yeah sure, otherwise they are there for the taking…
