Condemning the past for not being the present has been a popular intellectual superstition among self-styled enlightened for the past century and a quarter, at least.

Ah, yes…”presentism”, which Chesterton dissected unmercifully, as only he can, in The Everlasting Man. It seems to be a feature of the human psyche, not a bug. Another thing we have to fight day by day.
