Grant’s funeral and interment was attended by a large number of ex-Confederates. John B. Gordon found his buggy swarmed by enthusiastic Union veterans eager to shake his hand. One Union vet good-naturedly said “You know, I’d a-shot you 20 years ago.” Gordon just as good-naturedly replied: “Oh, likewise.”
