Mahony is near 90. Calling him a Boomer is an insult to Boomers and Lord knows I’ve done my fair share of criticism of that generation (no disrespect intended to our host and the other commenters).

If you’re paying attention, the funeral preparation and liturgies exposed the corruption of the current leadership in the Vatican. Cardinal Mahoney having a public role? Tells you all you need to know and I pray it’s not an indication of what’s coming out of the conclave.

…”I pray it’s not an indication of what’s coming out of the conclave.”

Amen, Matthew. Along the same lines of thought, I just read this morning that Bishop Athanasius Schneider is asking for a Rosary crusade to, as he so eloquently puts it, “emancipate the See of Peter from the enemies of the Church.” Sounds like a good intention to put at the top of the list while we await the decision of the Conclave.

And be as polite as possible, in the meantime, to those low-information friends and family members who think the execrable film “Conclave” is some kind of reliable guide to anything at all except the fever dreams of left wing nuts.

Mahony is too old to be a Boomer – the first Boomers will reach 80 years old next year. I am at the end of that generation, which is considered by demographers to be between 1946-1964.

Cardinal Mahoney’s successor, Archbishop Gomez, stripped the Cardinal of all administrative and public offices and barred him from public ministry within the LA archdiocese almost a decade ago. This was of course because of revelations that Cardinal Mahoney had orchestrated coverups of clerical sex abuse when he was head of the Archdiocese.

It’s very telling that under Francis, Archbishop Gomez was never made a Cardinal even though a red hat has traditionally gone to the Archbishop of Los Angeles… It would seem that punishing the corruption of the wrong people, the Friends of Francis, comes at a price— and I’m sure it’s a lesson our more venal, ambitious bishops have taken to heart.
