“Knavish imbecility” is probably being too charitable for our times.
I agree Josh, I wish I could blame some of these Vatican shenanigans on imbecility. Even attributing some of their nonsense to greed seems charitable. No, malevolence seems a more likely motivation for too much of it.
As something of an amateur historian, I note that the fortunes of the Church tend to rise and fall like the tide the rise is when most often needed.
