Saint of the Day Quote: Saint Vincent Ferrer

A vain question deserves nothing but silence. So learn to be silent for a time; you will edify your brethren and silence will teach you to speak when the hour is come.

Or as my husband would say, “Not every question deserves an answer.”

I was reading my monthly copy of Magnificat while at First Friday Adoration yesterday and a meditation on the Incarnation by him came across my vision. Very moving.

Also, S. Vincent Ferrer’s two most famous statements he thundered over and over: “I repeat the words of the Prophet: ‘Arise, ye dead, and come to Judgement.’ (1 Thess. 4:16)

And called by the Pope Benedict XIII “The Angel of the Apocalypse,” he famously often preached this sermon about the End:

“ In the same way, in the time of Antichrist, the Sun of Justice will be obscured by the interposition of temporal goods and the wealth which Antichrist will bestow on the world, inasmuch as the brightness of faith in Jesus Christ and the glow of good lives will no longer shine among Christians. For, lest they should lose their dominion, temporal rulers, kings and princes will range themselves on the side of Antichrist. In like manner, prelates for fear of losing their dignities, and religious and priests to gain honors and riches, will forsake the Faith of Christ and adhere to Antichrist. Now he [Antichrist] will be a veritable man, but so proud that, not only will he desire to have universal dominion of the whole world, but will even demand to be called a god, and will insist on receiving divine worship.” (From: “Angel of the Judgment: A Life of Vincent Ferrer,” by S.M.C., Ave Maria Press. Chapter XI, pp. 102-117. [This entire chapter consists of the third of the sermons given on the second Sunday in Advent; on the last judgment.])

Those who can hear, should hear.

[FYI, Pope Benedict XIII, Pedro Martínez de Luna y Pérez de Gotor (25 November 1328 – 23 May 1423, of Avignon, was later considered along with the other two contenders, also by S. Vincent Ferrer, to be an anti-pope.]
