PopeWatch: Rupnik Again
- Donald R. McClarey
Donald R. McClarey
Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.

There are a number of people, I suspect, who truly believe that loyalty in this world is a bonus on their ledgers in the next. It is the only non-cynical explanation. Otherwise, I got nothing else…
There is no circle of Hell too deep for Rupnik, nor is there any excuse for his bizarre paintings to be displayed in any public space connected with the Church, whether on walls or on the covers of “missalettes.” I am unmoved by the “But, but, Caravaggio!” arguments from some circles. Getting drunk and killing a man in a bar brawl (if, in fact, Caravaggio was responsible for the death, which as I understand it, has never been proven) is light years away from any moral equivalence to Rupnik’s crimes.
And, apparently, still free to move about the land. No sense of urgency here.
The silence of the bishops, worldwide, is a disgrace.
But, why does this, during Lent of 2025, surprise me?

Only the Pope can absolve Rupnik for desecrating the Sacrament of Penance.
