PopeWatch: Rupnik Again

The story is in Italian.  When historians assess this pontificate, there is no way they can sweep Rupnik under the rug, and when the Pope has his exit interview with Christ, I suspect He will have a word or two with the Pope about Rupnik. The Justice of God is often delayed, it is never denied.

There are a number of people, I suspect, who truly believe that loyalty in this world is a bonus on their ledgers in the next. It is the only non-cynical explanation. Otherwise, I got nothing else…

There is no circle of Hell too deep for Rupnik, nor is there any excuse for his bizarre paintings to be displayed in any public space connected with the Church, whether on walls or on the covers of “missalettes.” I am unmoved by the “But, but, Caravaggio!” arguments from some circles. Getting drunk and killing a man in a bar brawl (if, in fact, Caravaggio was responsible for the death, which as I understand it, has never been proven) is light years away from any moral equivalence to Rupnik’s crimes.

And, apparently, still free to move about the land. No sense of urgency here.
The silence of the bishops, worldwide, is a disgrace.
But, why does this, during Lent of 2025, surprise me?

Only the Pope can absolve Rupnik for desecrating the Sacrament of Penance.
