One of the more absurd and disgusting appellations Alexander’s successors assumed was SOTER or SOTEROS, meaning “savior”. (An ironic homonym for Barry Sotero BTW). The Seleucids and Ptolemies had at least one dude with that title. After Persia and later Macedon swept aside the old sacred monarchies and their gods, the disillusioned masses started worshiping men (i.e. “practical politics”). As we have lost our Christian heritage, some in the culture are following the same path.
