And for a long trek, some vaseline in your socks can be helpful. Carrying some light dried fruit isn’t a bad idea, along with some hard candy to suck or gum to chew. Watch out for loose dogs, and drivers not paying attention. Doing such long strolls in a group is a plus. A hat to keep off the sun is a must.

I remember, back in the early Sixties, that there was a brief civilian fad for doing 50-mile hikes. I remember photos in Life magazine of dazed hikers slogging along, each one, no doubt, wondering just whose lousy idea this was. Perhaps this should be brought back. It would be a relief to see a disorganized mob of the populace brought together for some benign common purpose.
