The amphibious landing at Inchon seventy-four years ago was MacArthur’s masterpiece. Timed with the allied breakout from the Pusan Perimeter, it spelled doom for the North Korean forces. Using the 1st Marine Division, the Old Breed, and the Army 7th Infantry, backed up by smaller ROK units, MacArthur staged the landing in the teeth of opposition from most other generals and admirals consulted, who pointed out the physical difficulties of staging an amphibious invasion at Inchon. Like many of MacArthur’s military operations it was brilliant and dangerous. MacArthur rolled the Dice of War, and for the last time in his career he got a winning result.
