Bob Newhart, master comedian, has left us far too soon at age 94. He is perhaps known best for his two long running shows The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart.
The Newhart show had a legendary ending:
His humor was of a gentle variety and always suitable for families, as well being quite funny. He and his one and only wife were married for 60 years until her death last year. They were both Catholics and raised their kids, two boys and two girls, in the Faith. Whatever his political views were, he kept them to himself. I think his exist interview with Christ was brief and laughing on both sides; I will miss him.
We still watch both of those shows on the rerun channels. As you noted, a true master, who did not need vulgarity to be funny. RIP.
St Ignatius College Prep (Chicago) grad (‘47), Loyola Chicago grad (‘52). Served in Korea as a clerk in the U.S. Army. He often spoke of the formative moral influence of the great Jesuits he had who were his teachers in those days.
Prayer for his soul today.
