In the last century, I’d say Bush the Younger, Bush the Elder, Reagan, Carter, and Calvin Coolidge are the presidents whose facial affiliations roughly matched their actual practice and profession. With the others, you get glaring anomalies. Hoover, Eisenhower, and Nixon were all the sons of women in the peace churches. Harding, Roosevelt, Kennedy, Johnson, Clinton, and Trump were all serial adulterers, albeit of differing magnitudes. Harding, Roosevelt, Truman, and Ford were all freemasons and Truman was a high mucky muck in his particular federation of lodges. Gerald Ford somehow found an Episcopal priest to solemnize his marriage in 1948, even though it was (according to the marriage canon in effect prior to 1970) invalid. Obama received his religious instruction from his goofy grandfather, who joined a Unitarian congregation because ‘you get five religions for the price of one’, then landed in Jeremiah Wright’s hyperpolitical africanisant congregation. As for Biden, he’s a sexual deviant, a bribe-taking scumbag, an inveterate liar. (I suspect the reputations of Roosevelt, Kennedy, and Carter might survive an audit of their books, though in Kennedy’s case only because in the division of labor in the family, money crimes were daddy’s job).
Biden’s personal behavior concerns me only as an indicator of his character. The voters will have their say in November on that matter. What is more telling is the scandal arising from his actions and then being portrayed as some sort of exemplar of a virtuous person. Believe I remember some biblical comments about the destiny of such persons and would recommend some soul searching during this Lenten season.

Eisenhower’s parents started out as members of a Mennonite sect known as the River Brethren; his mother later joined the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Ike himself didn’t belong to any church until 1953, when he was baptized into the Presbyterian Church. To date he is the only president to formally join or change religions while in office.
