I have always thought it a disgrace that the 10th Amendment was wasted on something so vile as slavery. And when the South seceded, slavery was the one thing in their constitution that was not left to their states to decide.
At no time during the election of 1860 did the Republicans promise to end slavery. The Democrat platform was, as it is today, essentially mealy mouthed and whiney. For some strange reason, the shadow of the executed John Brown was cast over the election in the Southern states despite that it was Southern officers that put down the attempt at Brown freeing the slaves. End result was a combination of fear, hubris and a false comparison with 1776 that caused the secession.
