Lewis Mumford’s Prophecies Come True
The crime, evil, decay, amorality, and horror of Democrat-controlled cities – almost all the big cities in America – is not an accident. It is not due to bad management, bad luck, or stupidity. What the democrats have done and will continue to do is part of a totalitarian plan to take over not only the cities, but the states and the entire nation. It is as if, instead of taking as warnings what many foresaw as the coming decline and disintegration of our country, the democrats saw these as an outline of a way to take power – total power.
It has been over half a century since Lewis Mumford’s dire predictions about “Necropolis” and “Megalopolis” in his 1961 A.D. classic, The City in History. His predictions have now proven true regarding most large, for-decades democrat controlled, present-day cities in the United States, which are now the “tumor” cities Mumford predicted.
It remains to be seen if his further predictions will also come true – and that these democrat-controlled cities will be the basis for the “complete disruption and downfall” and “disintegration” of America.
Mumford’s Prophecies – Today’s Democrat Reality
Mumford’s prophecies sound like a summary history of the Democratic Party in America and what its programs, platforms, actions, and agendas have meant for big cities. These prophecies included:
the evils associated with “boundless expansion”
an “irrational misuse of science and “invention”
a “dehumanized” society”
“aimless giantism” leading to totalitarian control, to separation of social classses and to “general regimentation” of a “standardized” populace and
a “tentacular” bureaucracy.
Mumford refers to megalopolitan necropolitan cities as an embodiment of “socially retarded civilization” leading to an “encapsulated life,” “Untouched by human hand at one end: untouched by human spirit at the other.”
He echoes the songwriter and poet, Mason Williams:
CITY
City
Is when
A bunch of people
Get together
So they can start
Being shitty to one another
For being
Too close together
Then they want applause
For surviving the problem
Called city they’ve caused
Cities go
From one
To minus zero
They’re put together well
Exactly wrong
Just like
Their throng
(Flavors. New York: Doubleday 1964)
This poem should be made the National Anthem for the Democratic Party and its Democrat Controlled Cities, “DCCs”.
The DCC Tumor cities
Mumford paints a picture of the modern city that is beyond bleak, a picture that again and again in democrat-controlled cities across America has become today’s sad, grim reality:
“Random killing and limitless death gave their final stamp to the realities of megalopolitan expansion . . . a “tumorous organ” . . . a “spider . . . “undifferentiated urban tissue” . . . a “man-sewer” . . .; and “cancerous tumors”
“In short, every successful institution of the metropolis repeats in its own organization the aimless giantism of the whole” (Mumford 531). The Democrat Controlled Cities are Mumford’s tumor cities.
By pushing all forms of traffic onto high speed motor ways, we burden them with a load guaranteed to slow down peak traffic to a crawl; and if we try to correct this by multiplying motor ways, we only add to the total urban wreckage by flinging the parts of the city ever farther away in a formless mass of thinly spread semi-urban tissue (Mumford 508).
Paul Ramsey’s single line poem, On Industrialism describes these DCCs:
The Road to Hell is paved
(Ramsey, Paul. “On Industrialism.” The Bedford Introduction to Literature. Ed. Michael Meyer. Boston: St. Martins, 1990).
Mumford sees the insidious social isolation caused by DCC megalopolitan cities as having political implications: “Suburbia offers poor facilities for meeting, conversation, collective debate, and common action – it favors silent conformity, not rebellion or counter-attack. So Suburbia has become the favored home of a new kind of absolutism: invisible but all-powerful. (Mumford, 513).
The political debate and social interplay in the Athenian forum or outside the Globe Theater in Shakespeare’s London do not occur in present-day DCC tumor cities simply because groups of people, small or large, either do not encounter each other periodically in settings that lend themselves to such activity or, when social events occur, politics is not at the top of the list of what to do in the minimal time available for leisure.
A telling indicator of the coming-to-be in present-day DCC tumor cities of the absolutism to which Mumford refers is the incredibly small number of qualified voters who vote in many elections at any level – city, county, state, or nation. A forty per-cent voter turnout in many DCCs for any election is phenomenal. Often a winner in a DCC city receives votes from less than 10% of the eligible voters, and this is sometimes as low as less than 3%.
Plethora of Data
To get an idea of just how bad the DCC tumor cities are, do an internet search with the words “democrat controlled,” “cities,” and any of the following:
Corruption
Decay
Murder
Violent crime
Economic segregation
Housing segregation
School segregation
Illegal voting
Fraudulent voting
Riots
Looting
Vandalism
Hope ?
Mumford sees little, if any, hope for a megalopolis like the present-day DCC tumor cities. He speaks of “the final stage of disintegration;” refers to the situation as “hopeless;” and calls such cities a “death trap.” Weekend murder statistics for many of these DCC tumor cities show how true is the description of “death trap.” Mumford’s only solution is very idealistic:
So with cities: to correct the deficiencies of our over-mechanized civilization, we shall have to build up a multi-centered system of control, with a sufficient development of morality, intelligence, and self-respect to be able to arrest the automatic processes – mechanical, bureaucratic, organizational – at any point where human life is in danger or the human personality is threatened with loss of values and choices.
Mumford’s cure is as utopian as anything proposed by Plato or More. It is also directly contrary to Democratic Party goals, programs, and agendas, both local and national, and would mean their loss of control and power, not only in their DCC tumor cities, but on a national level as well.
Democrats Thrive on the Division They Create
The other main reason Mumford’s cure will not work is that – with its intentionally democrat-caused divisions – there is no consensus, and planned bitter acrimony, about morality and politics on many basic issues. Without a consensus on such issues, a population cannot unite in a common pursuit of the general welfare. The very definition of “general welfare” is in dispute in the DCC tumor cities.
A consensus on anything would limit and heal division, but the democrats power is based on division – division caused by them.
WOW….
This is our reality in 2024.
Mumford refers to megalopolitan necropolitan cities as an embodiment of “socially retarded civilization” leading to an “encapsulated life,” “Untouched by human hand at one end: untouched by human spirit at the other.”
So true. Good find Guy.
The Road to Hell is paved
Amen.
This is slightly off topic…
While ministering in Jefferson county jail I heard a prisoner describe a signal vision he had while at the height of his debauchery. He said he was walking on an extremely long and wide blacktopped road.. in what he imagined to be in 115° heat. The paved road was so hot that the heat was rising into his nostrils making him dizzy and weak. The next thing he recalled was the right cheek and forehead we’re in contact with the blacktop. He had fainted he thought.
Then he said Jesus help me.
At that moment he saw a man laying next to him, on the blacktop, with bloody long hair covering his face. The man tried to move but couldn’t.
He was weighted down by a large beam.
The beam was attached to his back by rope.
The prisoner thought that this guy was in such worse shape than himself that he should try to help him.
When he rose to his feet and began the process of helping the stranger up, he saw his face.
Jesus!?
The man nodded in the affirmative.
At that instant the prisoner knew without a doubt that he himself was heading to hell. That Jesus appeared to him in this vision.
He said he woke up in a heavy sweat and started balling.. crying for forgiveness.
Even after that grace the man continued in his old ways, eventually ending up in jail.
I spoke to him of Reconciliation and God’s great gift of the Holy Sacraments via Catholic Church.
Of Divine Providence and our meeting, and him sharing the story of his walk to hell.
By the time I passed the baton on to Deacon Greg, as I was preparing to move to Michigan, the man hadn’t excepted the invitation.
So easy to stay on the paved road… and not accept the narrow path, that, even though it has it’s challenges, leads to everlasting Life.
Indeed, many are called, but few are chosen.
I hope that we all make it home safe and sound.
Unless man acknowledges his sovereignty and disciplines himself man will return to barbarism. Man has Jesus Christ’s prayer that all may be one in Him, that is in the soul of Christ and man rational, immortal human soul, the children of God.
The Democratic Party does not any right or freedom to deny man’s rational, immortal human soul.
We have our Founding Principles, The Declaration of Independence and our Constitution with its Preamble to tell us who “We , the people” are and how to behave.
John Paul Sartre’s “God is dead” philosophy, the musings of a madman, for God rose from the dead and ascended into heaven.
When God was ostracized from the public square (God did not stay dead, but is very much alive in infinity) all citizens were denied their rational, human soul and their freedom of religion.
When the unborn newly begotten human souls were denied birth by Federal law, all people were denied their rational, human soul and with their soul, “We, the people” were denied all civil rights bestowed by “their Creator”
All mankind are in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Jesus Christ died and rose from the dead for each and every sovereign person and “We, the people” are the children of God, the brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ our Savior and Redeemer.
King Herod was a “Democrat” and Herod was eaten alive by worms before he died. Herod may be in heaven if he repented of killing the innocent children. But the Democrats creating hell in America will have to repent to avoid the worms. Worms have no teeth. The worms suck in the body fluids.
Vengeance is mine saith the Lord and so are the worms.
