Recognition of Israel was very much a personal decision by President Truman who received conflicting advice, and entirely negative advice from a State Department hostile to the creation of a Jewish state that would quickly lead to conflict with the Arabs.
Truman had deep sympathy for the Jews and believed that a Jewish state was a must after the Holocaust. The US was the first state to give recognition to the new nation of Israel, which was a morale booster for the Israelis who faced invasion from the five neighboring Arab states.
A very courageous act. During the war, neither the State Department nor the Defense department showed much concern for what was happening to the Jews.
