Fascinating look at an Italian POW chapel built by Italian prisoners of war in Orkney during World War II. Reminds me of largely Italian-American parishes I have visited over the years.
I was there in 2017. A beautiful chapel built by men at war.
The locals consider it a point of pride and maintain it well, even though there are very few Catholics on the islands.
I’m not sure what pleases me more. That Italians in WWII wanted to build it. That British in WWII let them. Or that 21st Century British care enough to preserve it.
Let’s hope there is a generational future plan in place to maintain this beacon of beauty.
