Someone dying at 100 has had a good run normally, but for James Buckley, the brother of the late William F Buckley, the time was too short. A Navy combat veteran of World War II, he managed the extraordinary feat of running for the US Senate in 1970 in New York on the Conservative Party ticket, and winning. While in the Senate he proposed the first Human Life Amendment banning abortion. Defeated for re-election in 1976 by the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan, he was appointed by President Reagan to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in 1985 taking senior status in 1996. At the time of his death on August 18, 2023 he was the oldest living former member of the Senate.
He and his late wife had six kids. A life well lived. May his life after life be as fortunate.
Amen.
It’s hard to think of anyone near his calibre in public life today.
An honest politician. May his tribe increase.
