Leftists and Patriotism

So the Associated Press runs an editorial stating that the term patriot is problematic on the 3rd of July.  This is the secular equivalent of the Christ bashing stories so beloved of the media around Easter.  Go here to read the story.

Leftists love the power of the State;  the country, not so much.  Leftism first and foremost is a cult, and it is a cult dedicated to bringing into being a future Leftist utopia.  All things outside the cult, God, Country and Family for example,  are suspect, except in such ways as they can be twisted to serve the cult.  The chief emotion of Leftism is always hate, hate as the motivating force for radical change.  Love of God, of Country, of Family is ever a threat to the politics of hate of the Left.  People are to be shorn of such attachments and reduced to atomized, powerless individuals, easily manipulated, or coerced, to serve the cult.

Orwell, a man of the Left, saw where this was leading in his brilliant 1984:

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

People make a category error when they think that Leftism is a form of politics.  It is a form of religion, and a highly aggressive and intolerant one at that.

The three AP officials whose byline graces the article are all Gen-X j-school graduates (ages 45-63) who attended state colleges (in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Idaho respectively). One appears to work out of Washington while the other two work in Omaha and Boise, respectively.

You could call it hate, and it is sometimes. We have in our circle of friends a man who is a retired congressional aide. He told us in the fall of 2018 that Congress had gotten to be a very uncomfortable place to work and that you could feel the animosity as you walked down the hall. His old boss is a Republican, though an unreliable one. He didn’t point the finger at anyone, but you read the papers and you realize one side is the aggressor and one is not. (He was working very long hours during the spendapalooza at the end of 2020. He said it would stupefy you what Democratic members of Congress wanted to do with public funds – i.e. toss wads of cash at their major donors).

That’s OK. We saw on the CBS evening news last night that a poll asked Americans what event the July 4th Independence Day holiday commemorated. Almost 40% got it wrong. But this ‘bothersome term’ trick isn’t new. I recall after the 9/11 attacks, the AP drew flak for suggesting the term ‘terrorist’ was problematic when referring to the attacks or the attackers. Somehow I think undercutting the reliability of perfectly acceptable words and almost 40% of Americans having no clue is related.

Except they’re not. They’re self-aggrandizing twits who live to pester people.

Every once in a while you write, “go here to read the story”, and I proudly say “no”. AP badmouths patriotism? Thank you for noting it, and I’m moving on to the rest of my day. Every American has been reading that article, metaphorically, since 1968.

No it is not. The pervy schoolteacher who wants to talk dirty to eight year olds is not a Communist. She has hardly a clue what that entails. Use political terminology correctly if you don’t want to sound like an idiot.

Whether or not they are communists, I notice a growing number of individuals and outlets are certainly singing the praises of variations on Marx, Marxism, communism and comparing communist countries favorably to America and the West. If they couldn’t pass a communist 101 test, I’m still willing to take them at their word. It certainly would explain some things.

Art, I just posted on Sam Rocha doing so a few weeks ago. Heck, I think you commented on that one.

Rocha made an inane remark about ‘widespread ignorance of Marx’. It wouldn’t surprise me if Rocha was an admirer of Marx, but that standard-issue reproof of an imaginary person is not indicative of it. GoogleScholar pulls up 81 articles and reviews by Rocha issued over a period of 14 years. I have a suspicion running down the list that he’s the sort of word merchant of whom Alan Sokal made a target.

Art, I’m a little more lenient. If I see someone casting longing glances at Marx (or Hitler for that matter), I take them at their word. They might not be able to pass a Communism 101 final exam, but I don’t think that matters. What matters is where they are drawing inspiration from, and what that will lead to in their own activism.
