“What I despise most about warfare, is the hypocrisy if often breeds. I’ve heard euphemisms that we are ‘containing the enemy’, that our ‘sector of pacification is growing’. These are the tactics of the lie. Lies have the stench of death and defeat.
Colonel Strelnikov (William Smith), Red Dawn (1984)
A photographer would had to have been very lucky to be able to snap such an “action” shot. Also, men on a battlefield rarely fell in such a dramatic fashion. They usually either dropped immediately, or they carried on for a while, not realizing they had been shot. Like most of the iconic images of that most dishonest of conflicts, The Spanish Civil War, this image was manufactured to tell a story of heroic Republican resistance. There was heroism among the Republicans, but it was almost never captured on photograph or film. Far more common was ill-trained and ill-led Republican levies collapsing before the attacks of better led, and better trained, Nationalist forces, but that image was not going to sell papers and make careers. Lies and warfare go together like bribes and politicians.
I’d classify this contention as ‘interesting if true’.
Capa was a man of remarkable physical courage. By some accounts he was both a political leftist and a lothario.
Staged photos were nothing unusual at the time Art. If Capa was part of a staged photo I doubt most of his fellow professional photographers would have thought it unethical.
That is the one area where the Republic excelled: international propaganda.
A helpful reminder that Duranty was far from being the only apologetic fraud for left-wing tyranny.
Duranty didn’t stage a photo. He wrote reams of copy, duly published by his editors, which was utterly mendacious. The arrogant sociopaths who run The Times have never owned up to it. That’s an offense an order-of-magnitude worse than what Capa is alleged to have done.
