Well, let’s see:
1. Two world wars in 35 years. No world wars since 45.
2. Only two major European wars since 45.
3. Only one fairly brief major power war in South America, the Falklands War, since 45.
4. Only two major wars, Korea and Vietnam, in Asia since 45.
5. No major power wars in Africa since 45.
6. No use of nuclear weapons since Nagasaki.
Perfect peace will never occur in this Vale of Tears, but the peace that has endured, with interruptions, in a turbulent world since 45 has been impressive. Nuclear weapons broke the cycle started in 1914 of Great Powers going to war directly with each other. That is not an illusion but a substantial accomplishment.
Why do people still listen to this person? Is it the hope that he might get something right “once in a while”? Too likely to be unfruitful. Basic logic is that if a pope claims that all Magisterium before him were wrong, Scripture needs reinterpretation and Tradition is all too rigid -it’s more than safe to IGNORE him.
Falklands War really pissed him off.
“Weapons of mass destruction” are also the main reason why whoever seeks to take over other nations in seeking power, will have to break them from within–hence the corrupt and sinister behavior of far too many of todays leaders.

As the article points out, nukes made it too dangerous to engage in total conventional world war like WWII. Elimination of nuclear weapons would remove this deterrent to total conventional world war. The problem is that we can’t unlearn the nuclear physics that makes the bomb possible and how the deadly logic of total war can lead to rebuilding and use of nuclear weapons.
