When discussing the truths of the Faith with one who professes unbelief or agnosticism, the willingness of the Apostles and other martyrs to die for Christ is, in my experience, the second most powerful argument. The first is the argument of Belloc: any purely human institution run “with such knavish imbecility” would never have lasted so long. Might it be so that the obvious decline of the purely human institutions all around us is what endows Belloc’s observation with such probative value today?

Lord, give us the virtues to boldly profess your presence and your glory. If need be, strengthen us as you did our brothers who laid their lives down for thy Kingdom. May our dead grain of wheat produce for you a bountiful harvest.
In all things, for your Glory now and forever.
