Re: gun bans/confiscations. In fact, essentially no one complied with CT’s and NY’s January 2013 [knee jerk] gun bans enacted immediately after the Sandy Hook incident – never let a good massacre go to waste.
The gun control discourse (notably in the hands of Barack Obama) is a device for sticking the blame for slum crime with gun owners living outside core cities. It’s disgusting.
Note, New York City is one place that implemented a successful social renorming between 1990 and 2010. There were no changes in New York’s gun laws. Instead, the city doubled the size of its police force, kept meticulous statistics on offenses and deployed manpower accordingly, and implemented best practices. Officers were encouraged to get out of the doughnut shop and on the streets and do deploy proactive tactics. The result was an 82% reduction in the homicide rate. What the state government supplied was a trebling of prison capacity, so that a criminal conviction commonly meant actual punishment.
Liberals are actually quite hostile to the foregoing program. They’re entire program consists of an interlocking series of status games.
You’ll note the two most prominent exponents of ‘gun control for a four decade period were Nelson Shields and Sarah Brady. Nelson Shields was a duPont executive whose son was shot dead in San Francisco in 1974, one of the ‘Zebra’ murders. It was the odd case where someone was killed by a perfect stranger, even odder in that no burglary or robbery was in progress at the time. He was shot at random as he was moving around some gear in his car trunk, never seeing the man who killed him; there was no motive but young Sheids’ white skin. Does his father rail against the institutional slatternliness which had allowed the ruin of public order over the previous dozen years or against the race hatred which motivated his son’s murder? No, he blames the inanimate object. Sarah Brady discovered her six year old son playing with the loaded gun of a friend in the vehicle in which she had placed him. Does she blame the friend for leaving a loaded gun on his car seat or blame herself for not noticing it? No, she blames the inanimate object. The gun lobby was for 40 years led by two people who were emotions-driven to such a degree that the relationship between acts and consequences was unknown to them.
