Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings is so much better than Jackson’s version, more faithful to the letter and spirit of the book.
just watched the clip from “Rings of Power.” Is that an intentional or unintentional parody of wokeism?

Agreed Bob.
Intentional by the Babylon Bee.
Nerdrotic has been doing videos about this as well.
Bob, it doesn’t matter how woke. I’m already seeing a growing pile of articles bemoaning the racism of Tolkien and his works. The one on NBC seemed to say that no matter how hard this series tried to erase the racist elements, the racism was so ingrained that it still shows in this series. You just can’t be woke enough I guess.
Oh, and regarding Bakshi. I, too, think it’s overall better than much (though not all) of Jackson’s series. Bakshi, like the Rankin/Bass The Hobbit, leaves many things out, but adds very little. Jackson was at his worse when he tried, time and again, to out-write Tolkien. When he just kept to Tolkien’s works, that’s when his series shined.
I’ve seen the animated versions a long time ago, and they were fine. The first Jackson trilogy was breathtaking though. Not perfect, but Herculean. I have no interest in the Hobbit movies – I don’t really like the book even, and they sound a lot worse. I also found Bored of the Rings to be hilarious, but I had a raunchier sense of humor when I was younger.
Pinky there is a “Maple Film Cut” of the Hobbit, reducing the trilogy to a 2 hour “core” film. If you ever get a bit of curiosity, may want to check that out.
I think I saw that green hair dude (?) at Renne Faire this past summer.
Nate, is it just a condensed version of the movies, or the parts from the book?
It always disgusted me to some degree to be aware that there were people writing fan fiction where Legolas and Gimli were in a gay relationship or whatever. But I never paid them any mind beyond that.
We would be a lot healthier if people treated the Amazon series like that. It’s just crappy fanfiction. Even if you accept that the rights holders can arbitrarily change “canon” it’s still fanfiction since Amazon didn’t shell out for the rights to anything from the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, etc. (which would be necessary to follow to get anything remotely accurate for their time period.)
It is so unconnected from anything that Tolkien did that even to pay enough attention to it to get upset about it is to insult the original work.
It’s just crappy fanfiction.
Exactly.
Honestly, it’s one of the big arguments I’d give for why copyright needs to be returned to something closer to what it was at the start– it’s gotten way too expanded, and it’s strangling the cultural mythos.
