Go here to read the story. Color PopeWatch unimpressed. Father Martin, PopeWatch suspects, is only sorry that he aroused a whirlwind of criticism. That Martin’s first reaction after Weakland went to judgment was to celebrate this disgrace tells us a lot about Father Martin, and perhaps about the Lavender Mafia. What normal people view as crimes are, in the eyes of many of those fond of the memory of Weakland, at worst peccadilloes not worthy of mention or recall on his passing. Something that does not disturb us is merely background noise, like whether a departed person liked pizza with anchovies or not. It is not worthy of mention in a comment on their death. PopeWatch suspects that was the case with Father Martin and his initial remembrance of Rembert Weakland, active homosexual and protector of predator priests.

He’s sorry? Really, he’s sorry? Mea culpa? Mistakes were made? One has to wonder if lightning bolts ever hit confessionals?
If I were representing abused altar boys and seminarians from the Milwaukee area I would subpoena James Martin Ess Jay of the Church of the Jesuits as my star adverse witness, and would go anywhere I had to go to get his deposition. He perfectly exemplifies the attitude that allowed the scourge of clerical homosexual abuse of young men and adolescent boys to thrive. It would be the greatest of pleasures to cross-examine this guy. For about two days.
Mercy is given to the merciful. The violation of Holy Order vows to bring all soul to heaven makes of Martin a liar. Now, Martin wants us to believe that he is sorry…from a liar
The violation of Holy Order vows to bring all souls to heaven makes of Martin a liar.
Let’s summarize:
His first tweet praised Weakland and said that it was the Benedictine’s payoff to his male lover that marred his tenure.
His second tweet went tu quoque and asked if anyone else had friends who sinned.
The third tweet finally acknowledged–and pro-forma criticised–Weakland’s monstrous defense of child rapists. But left readers in the dark about the gruesome details, such as file shredding and Weakland’s belief that child rape was a sin, but not a crime.
I am unmoved.
The Pope apparently still likes him.

Not up on the particulars of the Milwaukee situation. Assume very few of the cases involved forcible sodomy as opposed to seduction or fondling. (All of which are crimes everywhere; Weakland was pushing the envelope claiming not to know that).
I bet my bottom dollar Martin is a homosexual. He’s built his career on advocating for this group. Voluntarily. Under a better Church administration (not a liberal one) he would be investigated. He shouldn’t wear the collar. At all. He is dishonest.
At the end of the day you want to see if the last Conclave used Dominion Voting machines since Martin is the spokes person?!?
I thought we had laws regarding the treatment, after death, of scandalous scoundrels? Something like “May God have mercy on his soul” or taking up funds for Masses said for his souls. NOT the celebration of his scandalous life.
He could have kept his warm, fuzzy feels to himself unless it was to take up a collection for the victims
Weakland is a modern version of the Fall of the House of Eli. Eli’s worthless sons were adulterers and treated the offerings to God with contempt.
So did Samuel’s sons, which is an irony often missed.
