Over a decade ago I had a then Ukrainian official from the Chicago consulate as my guest speaker at the Dwight Rotary Club. Even then there were tensions between Ukraine and Russia. I recall that he said that most Ukrainians had Russian relatives as was the case in his immediate family. He said that there would be much huffing and puffing but that he doubted it would ever come to full scale war. I was dubious at the time, but perhaps he was right after all. They aren’t. Russian revanchists have taken plans off the shelf to conquer the eastern Ukraine, contra the wishes of the inhabitants of the eastern Ukraine.
