Guilty

The moral of this story is that if you are going to play cop, you better be darn certain that you have your ducks in a row:

SEATTLE, WA—According to sources, local liberal activist and white woman Amy Crabtree felt extremely disappointed at the news that Ahmaud Arbery’s killers had been found guilty of murder, as there was nothing left in the news to fuel her activist rage.

“Yes, I want justice, but I also want to be very angry all the time,” said Crabtree. “Pure, unfiltered rage is what fuels our movement for justice, but right now, I feel happy. This isn’t good!”

Experts are warning that if the Left allows their continuous flow of outrage to die down even for a moment, the momentum behind their movement to topple western civilization and establish a utopia of perpetual peace and harmony may lose some steam.

“I need to make sure I reminded myself that even though justice was served here, we still live under an unjust system of white patriarchy all the time and everything is horrible and awful and Donald Trump might run for president again,” she said.

“Wait—DONALD TRUMP MIGHT RUN FOR PRESIDENT AGAIN! NNOOOOOOOOOO!” she screamed at the sky.

Go here to read the rest.  This case is the mirror image of the Rittenhouse case.  Rittenhouse was attacked and defended himself.   Ahmaud Arbery, when he grabbed for the gun that Travis Mcmichael was wielding, was acting in self defense against assailants who clearly to his eyes were not real cops.  The only way around that was if the Mcmichaels had been making a valid citizen’s arrest, and the facts simply did not bear that out.  So, we have one man dead and three men who are likely to spend the rest of their lives in prison.

Gregory Mcmichael should have known better, with his extensive background in law enforcement.  Now his desire to play cop one more time has landed both him and his son in jail for the rest of their lives.  William Bryan, who made the video, is also likely to spend the rest of his life in jail, a high price indeed for the adrenaline rush of playing cop.  Like the Rittenhouse case, all this likely could have been avoided if law enforcement were doing the job they are paid to do.  If Arbery was up to no good, a plausible assumption base upon the facts revealed during the trial, steady police presence would have caused him to go “jogging” elsewhere.  Instead, the cops were happy to have the pretend cops do their work, even telling them to “detain” the suspicious jogger.  How you “detain” an adult without using force the real cops did not say.  When the would be cops attempted to follow their bad advice, the real cops were only too willing to throw the pretend cops under the bus.  A cautionary tale for anyone who wishes to participate in a neighborhood watch or any other organized attempt to aid law enforcement:  if things go South you are on your own Jack.

The Judge by simply reading the laconic Georgia nineteenth century statute on citizen’s arrest to the jury, without making any attempt to interpret it for the jury, probably committed reversible error, which means this case will probably be a do over down the road.

A note of grace from Arbery’s father:

A good recap of the verdict:

Don, I had a couple of points to make about this case, but then I had to tuck my granddaughter in for the night, and my mind wandered, and I then recalled a far better story circa 1955-1960 about police and a building site.

The story is that police were called to a single home building site because neighbors were suspicious: it was dark and there were no lights on but they could hear power tools in operation. The police discovered the owner / builder was at work on his home, and he was a physicist at a nearby national lab (Argonne I think, which would make him a distant neighbor of yours) who was completely blind! He actually finished it and moved his family in.
I don’t recall his name, but I happened to see his obit in Physics Today. Only in America!

Hope you and all here had a thankful Thanksgiving!
