Is he tired or did he see something on the opposing page that made him decide to not deliver the remarks? He looks vibrant enough, walking quickly to the podium and adjusting his wardrobe with movements that suggests he’s quite well. Perhaps it was the first time he saw it and he decided the speech wasn’t something he was prepared to give. (Admittedly, care and consideration in speech aren’t exactly hallmarks of this papacy.)

We have inherently passively safe designs: NuScale PWR, GEH BWRX-300, molten salt thorium fueled reactors (which we actually built & tested in the 60s), gas cooled reactors (the old Ft. St. Vrain in Colorado was a first generation design – we’ve made vast improvements with pebble bed technology), etc. These designs obviate a TMI, Chernobyl, and Fukushima type event.
There is NO need to burn coal, oil or gas for electricity. Furthermore, gas is too valuable a resource for home heating and cooking and manufacture of plastics. And until we can transition transportation fuels from petro-based to hydrogen based (from nuclear reactors), we have to use oil. And our coal reserves can be converted into liquid hydrocarbon fuels if needed – it just takes energy (i.e., nuclear). And we can recycle all that “spent” fuel in fast neutron reactors and tell the anti-Yucca Mountain Democrats to go stick it where the sun doesn’t shine.
But you know why we don’t go nuclear? Because we can’t follow regulations. Everybody wants to do his own thing, and burning is always easier than fissioning. It’s what cavemen did! Besides, there’s too much $$$ to be made by kneecapping nuclear and subsidizing worthless, useless wind turbines & solar cells. Every renewable energy project is another gas turbine project for the 70% of the time when there’s no wind, no sunshine.
But guess what this worthless, useless usurper to the Pontificate supports? The useless and worthless! It boils my blood. In the meantime Biden supports a Russian pipeline to Germany and asks the Saudis to pump up oil production while he killed a pipeline from Canadian oil sands in Alberta. What the frack! It’s all a freaking joke, and the joke is on us.
Tired and disheveled and always unhappy looking. He could use a long rest but the job of burying tradition must come first.

There is a video that was just posted on YouTube titled “How close is nuclear fusion power?” by Sabine Hossenfelder. In this video she says that the Q value actually has two different values, Q_total and Q_plasma. She says that many of the recent reports are stating the Q_plasma value and not the Q_total value. She says that the Q_total value is lower than the Q_plasma value. Looks like this pushes fusion power generation further into the future than the press accounts would suggest. Seems like this leaves fission reactors as the only nuclear option for the foreseeable future.
