The Kite Runner is a well written novel about real life in Kabul for the priveleged and the low caste before and after the Taliban takes over. The Sharia law with their “justice” carried out in stadiums with crowds hired to watch the hahpless victims are remeniscent of the Roman coliseum.. Even though Bacha Bazi boys are outlawed the Taliban practice it or else look away. The author from a high caste family is a medical doctor who escaped from the first Taliban era and lives in California. I listened to the book in the car.
I am not against that nationality. A husband and wife team were excellent, intuitive physicians who owned an Acute Care clinic in Fairfax City. Ten years ago the wife probably saved my life with her correct diagnosis. I thought this attractive urbane couple were from Iran with their Persian last name. No, she explained to me that they were Afghani educated in pre Revolution Tehran and in the United States.
