News that I missed, courtesy of The Babylon Bee:
We all know watching the Oscars is America’s favorite pastime, but it was surprisingly eclipsed by several other shows this year! Here’s a list of programs that outperformed the Oscars’ ratings in 2021.
1. Wilford Brimley’s diabetes commercial: To be fair, it’s tough to compete with Brimley’s authoritative voice and majestic walrus mustache. Diabeetus.
2. Arlo Huckleberry’s infrared trail camera in Arkansas: This riveting viewing of various forest critters prowling around the hills at night averages 12 million views per day.
3. YouTube livestream of paint drying: Most audiences prefer this to lectures from millionaire celebrities.
4. TikTok reaction video to YouTube livestream of paint drying: Even more popular, because who doesn’t like zany reactions?
5. Video of someone unboxing the camera that was used to film the TikTok reaction to the YouTube livestream of paint drying: It’s a reeeaaally nice camera though.
6. A rerun of Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 where every other word is replaced with a clip of Owen Wilson saying “wow!”: Admit it, you’re looking this up already. We give it 5 out of 5 stars.
7. A very informative tutorial video showing you how to repair a Kenmore Series 8 washing machine that’s not spinning: Those of us who aren’t millionaire celebrities have to make these sorts of repairs ourselves. Plus, the Kenmore rep in the video was played by Wilford Brimley.
Go here to read the rest. The late, great Bob Hope hosted the Oscars 19 times. A video of him eating breakfast would draw more viewers than the Oscars did last Sunday.:
In 1953 when the Oscars were first televised the audience was forty million people, at a time when the US population was half of what it is now, and only twenty million households had televisions. In one lifetime Hollywood has gone from beloved institution to irrelevant institution.
Yes, who cares about any of this nowadays. The world happenings themselves should be enough entertainment for anyone.
“In one lifetime Hollywood has gone from beloved institution to irrelevant institution.” DM
Not surprisingly, in one lifetime America has gone from one Christian nation to a nation of many God’s.
With the abandonment of the one True God the increase of false God’s abounds.
In 1953 how many households were were Jewish or Christian?
In 2021 how many households are agnostic, non-identifying as being religious but “spiritual.” Not belonging to any organized religion or adopting political party as religion.
Less Hollywood the better.
Time for a Great Revival that the world has never seen. (?)
The number of believers might be smaller but my feeling is they will be energized with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Ready for a great revival.
Equipped to help the Shepherd with the strays.
At first I thought number 7 was going to be a video about brick in a running washing machine.
Dale Price is now older than Wilford Brimley was when Cocoon was released.
Brimley always looked about two decades older than he was.
I am than Brimley was then? Dang.
I don’t think I had heard of more than 2 of the films which had nominees this year, much less saw one.
The departure of nearly all of what I will call “legacy Hollywood” down the slippery slope of wokeism merely adds, one hopes, to the speed with which it immolates itself financially. Then perhaps a revival of an industry dedicated to actual entertainment can rise from the ashes. They have been all but out of ideas for decent films for a long while now. But for the wave of big budget, big revenue comic book hero flicks in the past 15 years or so, I suspect the losses would have far outweighed their earnings before now. One thing even woke mega corporations respond to is the bottom line.
Boxing, with it’s hypertrophy of weight categories and sanctioning bodies, is now a niche interest. A century ago it was the top spectator sport after baseball. Let this happen to every woke sector.
