Presumed guilty has always been reality, in contrast to our law and ideal that is the opposite. Chauvin’s guilt, or not, is not the saddest part of this display. We have just witnessed a judicial lynching in a major American city. Just substitute a black man being tried in a southern city after a year of riots by whites with the Courthouse surrounded by troops, threats of violence from members of Congress and others if no conviction, blood smeared on defense witnesses homes, etc. Regardless of guilt, if you are OK with this then you are OK with what just happened. A sad day for our justice system. Apparently many, if not most, have bought into the repulsive idea that the end justifies the means.
