Southern: It’s a Whole Other Language!

  • ‘Pusher’ Ross : An’ you haven’t even seen a subway?

    Alvin : I ain’t never even heerd o’ one.

‘Pusher’ Ross : ‘Heerd’? ‘heerd’ What kind o’ talk is that? Do they all talk that kind of English where you come from?

Alvin : Well there ain’t any English people down our way – just Americans.

    Sergeant York (1941). Screenplay

It is a matter of considerable regret that more people do not speak English as God intended:  Midwestern!

I stopped following “It’s a Southern Thing” last summer when they officially came out in support of the “Black Lives Matter” movement/organization.

My point is they speak one way and act differently. Their words now are quite alien to the American mind of the 20th Century who fought two world wars against similar ideologies. People should know that before they support them by watching their videos.

To clarify, WWI was not against “similar ideologies”. WWII, Korean and Vietnam all were against them (more or less).

Love the Boomhauer calls 911.

Calls to mind the best joke ever, when Boomhauer recounted his version of what happened in the firehouse.

(KotH is sometimes underrated)

Don, in general, I also source information from a variety of sources, up to a point, but I never financially support (endure commercials, ads or go through a paywalls) of those who diametrically oppose my morals.
BTW, welcome to the anti Bush bandwagon. He rarely surprised me (pleasantly) in many of his decisions. I used to complain that if there was a “D” after his name, the Democrats would have loved nearly all of his positions, but because it was an “R” he was portrayed as Satan himself. It was ALWAYS about the acquiring Power. Any accomplishment was / is incidental to the acquisition of Power and a single Party servers that purpose best. He wasn’t of the right Party.

In the North, “Put that there” is a complete sentence.

Fun- in your examples I heard southern and what I would cal Minnesotan or Michigan or Wisconsin.
I remember a newsman named Harry Reasoner telling about his “accent” as the ideal for speaking in national broadcast
He was from the Fort Dodge Iowa area

We need to invent some kind of gameshow… like a guess the word thing where the Yankees are paired up with southerners and Midwesterners for some accent on accent competition.

Little Rhode Island has at least three accents: northern Foster/Gloucester sound like they’re from Vermont ah-yup, Providence sounds like Brooklyn and South County has a drawl y’all.
It’s really strange for such a small state. I think it’s because no one ever leaves the state.

I especially liked the Alexa bit and the little sign that said “don’t pitch a hissyfit.” I asked my Polish wife if she knew its meaning. She didn’t. And she has been in the US for 30 years or more. Southern is definitely as second language. Trust me. I am a former teacher of English to speakers of other languages.
