A Skank By Any Other Name

So mistress is banned by the AP?  Possible replacements:  strumpet, harlot, long term prostitute, long term call girl, Kamala Harris wannabe, kept woman, sidepiece, bit on the side, courtesan, concubine, paramour, doxy, woman of easy virtue, fancy woman, slut, jade, hooker, woman of the night, woman of the streets, woman of the town, ho, tart, scarlet woman, chippy, trollop and drab.  Myself, I would recommend the good old Anglo-Saxon whore.

What I would call a married man in such a relationship is not fit for a family blog, but it would begin with bastard and go down from there.

We live in a deeply dishonest age in which we think by changing what we call something we can change the reality.  As noted by Congressman George W. Julian, who served in Congress while Lincoln was President:

There are strong reasons for saying that he doubted his right to emancipate under the war power, and he doubtless meant what he said when he compared an Executive order to that effect to “the Pope’s Bull against the comet.” In discussing the question, he used to liken the case to that of the boy who, when asked how many legs his calf would have if he called its tail a leg, replied, ” Five,” to which the prompt response was made that calling the tail a leg would not make it a leg.

Gosh, with “any kind of lust for free” a core part of the culture today, one would assume the AP wouldn’t bother with such archaic concepts as “a mistress.”

You left out that age-old Irish epithet, which calls it like it is:
“that dirty fecking hoor” …

You left out my personal favorite, “tramp”.

I like the word “slut” for a male equivalent. I don’t like blurring words that are associated with one sex or the other, but I think the word is just so blunt that it works.

I rather like a term apparently slung by one of my 17th century ancestressses in a Puritan settlement. According to court records, during the course of a heated dispute involving a cow, a corn patch, and a weasponized pumpkin, my venerabke foremother referred to her adversary as a “pennycoinquick”. Needs a bit of unpacking, but pungent.

Be prepared for these guidelines to be mysteriously forgotten when there is a scandal involving a politician with an R next to his name.
