The provision of health care is as subject to considerations of scarcity and cost as is the provision of any other service. You can ration with prices, ration with queues, ration with administrative directives. You must always ration. Mexico’s political economy being what it has been, the method of rationing will with scant doubt be political connections supplemented with queues.
Mexico made a political declaration and a little bit of administrative paper shuffling. They did not provide any funding for this. They remain with healthcare spending at 5.9% of GDP. And their GDP is already low. The United States spent 17% of GDP on healthcare and our GDP is already high. Like much of socialism… No make that all of socialism … It’s an illusion presented as some sort of victory.
But His Worthlessness and the one before him have declared health care a human right! One sentimental fool born in Democrat Chicago and formed in liberation theology Peru, the other born and raised in Marxist Peronist Argentina. So Mexico is doing what a good Catholic country would do according to both. I wonder what Plutarco Elias Calles and Evita Peron would say?

Per the Bureau of Economic Analysis, revenues which fall under the heading of ‘Health Care and Social Assistance” account for 7.1% of gross output. About 7.7% of value added is accounted for by that sector. About 55% of all revenue in the sector is now accounted for by Medicare and Medicaid. The ratio of Medicaid and Medicare expenditure to GDP is now 7%.
