Couldn’t Trump just order the arrest of Cuomo and Di Blasio instead of sending in the military?
Hertzberg, Harvard ’65, has worked in magazine journalism for nearly 50 years. He started out editing the newsletter of the National Student Association. He enlisted in the Navy in 1966, figuring he’d be less likely to be dispatched to Indo-China, and was assigned to a desk job in New York. At the time, he was also contributing pieces to a publication run by the Workshop in Nonviolence and the War Resisters’ League. The Navy mustered him out in 1968 when it discovered his blood didn’t clot well, which saved them the trouble of court-martialing him because he’d refused orders to report to a desk job in Da Nang. After that, he landed a position at The New Yorker and has spent most of his career there. He worked for Jimmy Carter’s speechwriting office for four years, was Martin Peretz’ deputy at The New Republic for six years, and had four years of miscellaneous employment before The New Yorker re-hired him in 1991. His association with Carter and Peretz is a puzzle.
He managed to persuade a published to issue a collection of his commentary and occasional journalism in 2004.

A critic remarked that – the title notwithstanding – there were precious few arguments therein. You read his work at The New Republic and you realized he was a bigot in the clinical sense. He’d simply never entertained an argument outside a certain perimeter of acceptable opinion and all of his opinions were standard issue for liberal Democrats of that era (his puerile atheism excepted). Peretz at the time was running a contentious operation chock-a-block with dissident liberals and each of their contributors had a distinctive voice. No clue why he wanted a mediocrity like Hertzberg editing everyone’s copy. And no clue why he sought a position with Carter or why he was hired. Carter’s evangelicalism was fundamental to his persona. His chief of staff and his press secretary were programmatic and ideological temporizers who accommodated but did not subscribe to the regnant liberalism within the Democratic Party at the time and Carter himself was somewhat off the reservation on important issues as far as the main body of congressional Democrats was concerned.
You get partisan Democrats going these days and you realize they live in a bubble and the bubble is impenetrable. Mike Barnicle, skeevy veteran of The Boston Globe wants the 25th Amendment invoked. They’ve grown so anemic in their ability to state and defend their positions, they’ve now repaired to the idea that the opposition is senile or insane. This will not end well.
Art Deco – you have a blog? (hey, even though we’ve butted heads sometimes, I quite respect your research ability)
I read that twitter thread; those people live in a parallel universe.
Any guesses as to what makes these people think there’s enough support for their TDS in the military to make a coup possible? I realize the command structure was probably loaded with incompetent generals and admirals by Obama, but would they be capable of such a thing? Doesn’t it require a great deal of support from front line troops? Perhaps, based on the very helpful bio and analysis Art provided, Mr. Hertzberg is simply clueless about the nature and scope of such an effort.
We have had the coup: Covid-19. Trump is done.
Good article:
‘The Political Suicide of Donald Trump’
This isn’t about whether Joe Biden is a viable candidate. He isn’t.
It’s about who is the VP candidate under him — and damn near anyone will beat Trump in November.
Why?
Because Trump has lied to his base about this virus, and worse, he sat back and let a significant number of them be ticketed, harassed and even arrested on a false premise and flat-out bullshit.
Not one of those people will vote for him again — and he can’t afford to lose any of them.

Trump didn’t lie.
It’s a real virus, it’s not the new black plague, and he had to deal with hysterical ninnies that got a good quarter of the country spun up into believing we’re all going to die.
I know who I blame for the over-reach I see. It isn’t the guy who doesn’t have the authority to stop it, and would be starting a riot if he did.
B…bu…but…
Trump told people to eat fishtank cleaner!
And wash it down with bleach!
I hope the China Murder Virus doesn’t kill me before I can vote for Trump in November.
If DJT loses, I hope I’m still breathing so I can get some in the Insurrection.
Frank,
They’ve spent 70+ years defecating on GI’s and ordinary Americans. Do they think GI Joe doesn’t know?
Unbelievable as it may seem, the thought that the Army/USMC is left wing is almost the stupidest thing the moronic left ever came up with.
Hendrik needs to be careful what he wishes for. The irony is that he would never see it coming. Mr. Dowd: I will never impose an ideological purity test until Christ himself is on the ballot. So, I can’t wait to vote for the best president we’ve had, by far, since Reagan. And, the idea that somehow Reagan himself initially wouldn’t have caved to the hysteria of the public health experts like Fauci is ludicrous. We have a binary choice in November. Just like last time, it’s not a close call.
The number of military regimes the world over can be counted on your fingers. The number of bosses and autocrats who have a history in the military, the uniformed police, or a partisan force is somewhat larger, but this crew is found predominantly in Tropical Africa (and is atypical even there). There has been one (1) military coup in an occidental country since 1939 (and it occurred in klutzadelic Greece).
