PopeWatch: Father Lombardi

VATICAN-POPE-AUDIENCE

PopeWatch has long admired the standup comedy performed by Vatican press flack Father Federico Lombardi.  In reaction to the cold call mess, go here to read about it, he has outdone himself with this hilarious statement:

Several telephone calls have taken place in the context of Pope Francis’ personal pastoral
relationships.
Since they do not in any way form part of the Pope’s public activities, no information or
comments are to be expected from the Holy See Press Office.
That which has been communicated in relation to this matter, outside the scope of personal
relationships, and the consequent media amplification, cannot be confirmed as reliable, and is
a source of misunderstanding and confusion.
Therefore, consequences relating to the teaching of the Church are not to be inferred from
these occurrences.

Let’s take these one at a time shall we?

Several telephone calls have taken place in the context of Pope Francis’ personal pastoral
relationships.

More shoes to drop?

Since they do not in any way form part of the Pope’s public activities, no information or
comments are to be expected from the Holy See Press Office.

In other words, the Pope tells the hapless Lombardi nothing, so he has nothing to say.

That which has been communicated in relation to this matter, outside the scope of personal
relationships, and the consequent media amplification, cannot be confirmed as reliable, and is
a source of misunderstanding and confusion.

And the Vatican Press Office will do bupkis to clear up the misunderstanding and confusion.  Shorter Lombardi:  You are on your own rubes!

Therefore, consequences relating to the teaching of the Church are not to be inferred from
these occurrences.

Of course not!  It isn’t as if the Vicar of Christ were involved.  Hey, wait….

It isn’t as if the Vicar of Christ were involved.

.
Exactly what “Father Bergoglio” believes, would be my surmise.
.
Kind of like Quintus Arrius’s old friend Pontius Pilate offering friendly advice to Quintus Arrius the Younger on the floor of the praetorium while pointing to the magistrate’s chair.
.
I don’t know if this is a bad thing or a very bad thing. I can’t believe it’s a good thing.

What poor Father Lombardi is saying is: He does whatever the hell he wants. I don’t know what he’s thinking and I certainly can’t control him. Why don’t you ask him yourself–maybe he’ll give you a call.
