The Quiet Man

A nice idealized version of Ireland for Saint Patrick’s day.  Go here to see the fight scene between John Wayne and Victor McLaglen, who was a boxer along with being an actor, for my money the best fight sequence ever filmed, and certainly the funniest.  Ironically, both Barry Fitzgerald, the matchmaker in the film, and Victor McLaglen, both of whom became screen archetypes as Irish Catholics, were Protestants, with the tough, burly McLaglen being the son of an Anglican bishop.

  1. I just rewatched “The Quiet Man” two nights ago with my wife. A romping good time — with a break in between for a pint o’ beer refresher!

  2. The Quiet Man is my favorite John Wayne movie.

At one time, I didn’t like any John Wayne movies except The Quiet Man. As I’ve gotten older, my appreciation for him has grown.

    Thanks for posting the clip.

  3. I’ve always been a fan of John Wayne, but as I grow older I find my appreciation for his technical skills as an actor has grown. As The Quiet Man indicates, he could range successfully outside of his six shooter personae.

  4. Maureen O’Hara, John Ford, John Wayne, Victor McLaglen, Ward Bond, Sean McClory, the Irish actors — and NO computerization. Character, plot, setting, and acting = art.

  5. The Quite Man was a tradition in our home. While we loved the entire movie, our favorite line is from Barry Fitzgerald; “I drink water, when I drink water, and I drink whiskey when I drink whiskey!”

  6. Watching The Quiet Man was a St Patrick’s day tradition in out house. Corned Beef and cabbage with Irish Soda bread with “green dyed” chocolate chip cookies then we gathered and watched this wonderful movie.

  7. One of my favorite John Wayne movies.

This film, which I first watched about five years ago, got me hooked on John Wayne movies.

And boy am I happy that he made a bunch. I enjoy viewing his movies very much!

I watch the Quiet Man about once a year or more. Great movie to watch with friends!
