How in God’s name did we go from Washington and Lincoln to this token catholic as a leader? Of course, how did we go from JPII and Benedict XVI to Frank. Liars gotta lie. I found this website about 2 yrs ago and have enjoyed its devout Catholic devotion from a quiet distance. I will enjoy telling the CINO’s I know “I told you so stupid” over the next 4 yrs. Life and politics are like chess but most catholics I know have minds unable to understand checkers.

Usually your memory decays front to back. Maureen Reagan once said she noticed nothing untoward about her father until the middle of 1993, and what she did notice was something that she indicated people would not notice unless they’d been actors: he’d clean forgot one of the roles he had. Edmund Morris later said Reagan stopped recognizing him in August of 1994 and that over the next six months he was in free fall. So, from about May 1993 to February 1995, he just disappeared. I’ve seen that before up close and personal. I have a suspicion that’s what we’re seeing right now.

How in God’s name did we go from Washington and Lincoln to this token catholic as a leader? Of course, how did we go from JPII and Benedict XVI to Frank.

Looking closer at hand illustrates the point more vividly. Herbert Hoover and Dwight Eisenhower were men of extraordinary accomplishment. Calvin Coolidge and Harry Truman exemplified virtues embedded in everyday life here and there and the next place. Ronald Reagan had a clearly-articulated set of principles and a rare natural talent for public administration. My grandmother, whom I knew well, could have voted for any one of them (and I suspect voted for all of them). My aunt, whom I knew well, could have voted for Truman, Eisenhower and Reagan. My grandmother died in 1987 and my aunt in 2015. It wasn’t so long ago we could, collectively, generate capable people who were (leaving aside the usual artifice in public life) on the square.

As this disease progresses the ability to recall simple events that occurred within the past two hours become impossible. Reminiscing on events that occurred years before are easier for the individual to recount.

The only silver lining in the battle is that in many cases the elder becomes unaware of the profound effects happening to themselves.
We love them and begin to speak their new language instead of trying to correct their obvious mistakes regarding names of objects or other challenges that are common in two year old behavior.

This tragedy is a jail for others who are on the fence. They know that something is wrong with themselves but can’t figure out what is wrong.
They cry or get aggressive and it’s by God’s Grace that caregivers will patiently redirect the individual by singing hymns, reading poetry, reciting uplifting Bible verses or, one of the best ones, just being present and listening to them. The ministry of touch, holding hands and rubbing their back, brings about a new emotion. A positive emotion.

I would not wish my worse enemy to suffer Alzheimers or Dementia.

I would ask any and all followers of TAC to consider becoming a volunteer at a memory care facility near you.

It makes a difference in the lives of these individuals as well as those that care for them too. A respite, even for 1/2 an hour, is a recharging of our [patience batteries.]
