A Bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, he died of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 71 in a Soviet labor camp on November 17, 1947. He was one of the countless victims of the attempt by the Soviets to liquidate Catholicism in the Ukraine. He could have left the labor camp at any time by agreeing to join the Russian Orthodox Church. His heroism shames those of us who ever refuse to stand up for Catholicism out of fear of social ridicule. Christ and His Church are worth any price demanded of us in this vale of tears.
