Rules Are For the Little People

The unspoken theme of the John Lewis funeral.  Leftists always make sure that the rules they proclaim will not apply to them.

I’m certain there was no singing either…out of concern for the community which is being hit the hardest by Covid?

Georgia was among the first states to start opening up, so I’m not sure the 10 person rule applies there. We’ve seen other places that the rules disappear when the left prefers.

I’m sure Lewis’ family and friends will miss him. That can be said of all but a few of us. However, the funerals of public figures are commonly de trop. That for Louise Slaughter ran on for more than two hours and included among the speakers John Lewis. Her daughters should have known better than that.

In the case of Lewis, the public discussion is thick with encomiums that bear little relation to who he was. The best you could say about Lewis as a public figure was that he produced no amatory scandals and no corruption scandals. That’s something. His net worth at the time of his death was in five digits. (The charitable interpretation of that is that he provided subsidies to his mother and his many siblings; the uncharitable interpretation is that he and his wife couldn’t control their spending). That having been said, he was a back bench Democrat who in 33 years in Congress produced and promoted not one piece of consequential legislation; everything he was associated with was trivia. He could have retired 13 years ago (when he was eligible for Medicare, full Social Security, and an agreeable pension) and his constituents would have been none the worse for it.

Prior to entering Congress, he had for 20 years been a functionary in a series of public and philanthropic agencies. He was, for a period of three years (1963-66) the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Co-ordinating Committee. Six other people ran that outfit during the modest run of years it was in existence. Four of them at the time they died might have received a Time – magazine “Milestones” notice. A fifth, Marion Barry, was a more important figure in American political life than Lewis, but his own conduct over the years ensured his obituaries would be subdued. The sixth and surviving is Rap Brown, currently resident in a federal prison in Arizona.

He had a certain amount of courage in his youth. You hear enough about it, though, and you wonder how many of the street-level Democrats talking this way derided George Bush’s Air Guard service flying the F-102. I couldn’t help notice there was some sort of military honor guard at his funeral. A dear friend of mine who had been at the Battle of Leyte was granted that courtesy at the time of his death in 2009. How often is that done for someone who was never in uniform?

Georgia was ten people, then 25, and now 50– but they must maintain a minimum 6 ft distance from all others.

Or he has a good accountant who made sure any worth was not in the net. (which doesn’t rule out either or both of the other options)

One whose talents are apparently untapped by any other member of Congress.

This is a religious ceremony to the demon of BLM. As high priests, they will be protected for their devotion from the demon of COVID-19.

A congressman who didn’t die a multimillionaire. I won’t complain.

Going off the folks I grew up around who were…well, part of the reason the tax code is such a mess, especially for non-profits… that would be to their credit. The background in “philanthropic organizations” makes it more likely. There are non-nasty ways to use them, even if a lot are shady, it’d mostly be amusing because the Dem party is involved in trying to stop folks using them. 😀
