At least 290 people are now known to have died in a coordinated attack on churches and hotels on Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka, in what officials have called a “brand-new type of terrorism.”
Police have arrested 24 people in connection with the suicide bombs, which injured at least 500 people, in the worst violence the South Asian island has seen since its bloody civil war ended 10 years ago.
Authorities were facing accusations that they had failed to act on a warning received ten days before the atrocity that an Islamist group was preparing an attack.
There were fears of more devices: A ninth improvised explosive device (IED) was defused near the capital’s Bandaranaike International Airport on Sunday evening, according to an Air Force spokesman.

Ranger01, thank you for bringing Asia Bibi to our attention. After reading numerous stories about her acquittal, it appears that Muslim zealot mobs are so fanatical that the Pakistani government fears it cannot protect her for a safe transit to Canada. My guess it will have to be a stealth operation as the less publicity the safer she is. For once the R. Catholic hierarchy lack of public outrage and concern may be the best course. That said one would hope there is much back channel comms between Canada and I. Khan. It is a miracle that after 9 years on death row for blasphemy, this woman would be set free. It is also amazing that her lawyer and the judges have not been murdered. The perjurers will never receive their punishment. The Pakistani government is afraid of religious, anarchist mobs.

Pope Francis is sure to change the subject in a few days, maybe a “breed like rabbits” statement to a Europe that’s about to be overrun. Yeah, not all Muslims are devout, like not all Germans were Nazis. But what is critical mass? And WWMD?
Actually an exhortation to “breed like rabbits” is just what Catholics, Europeans more generally, and all of the Western/1st world could use about now. Then we wouldn’t need to import the future we’ve chosen not to show up for.

We love the Latin Rite. Right now, it is the only thing anchoring us to this church at all. In fact the media has made a deliberate effort to report that “hotels” were targeted before they mentioned Churches were targeted. The headlines read “hotels and churches”, as if to imply that they weren’t targeting Christians.
