Pope Francis has backed Charlie Gard’s parents’ desire to “accompany and care” for their sick baby boy “to the end”, saying he hopes their wishes will not be ignored.
The pope weighed in on the situation as Charlie’s parents spend their last days with him after being given more time before his life support is turned off.
The 10-month-old, who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage, has been at the centre of a lengthy legal battle that has made headlines around the world.
A statement issued by the Vatican today on Pope Francis’ behalf was in stark contrast to a controversial one issued just days ago by his Pontifical Academy for Life.

The relationship between Charlie and his parents is a God-given human right which the state is usurping…kidnapping by the state and the imposition of atheism.
So far Shea’s only comment is to link to Fisher’s piece. (now what’s really funny is how the reasoning in her piece ends up shooting in the foot so many of Mark Shea’s recent blog posts)
I took a look at the linked Sincha Ficher piece, Nate. Here’s what I got out of it:
1) Doctors never misdiagnose patients
2) Doctors never commit perjury
3) I oppose medical experimentation for people who hope
4) I don’t believe in miracles
Yeah I didn’t get the medical experimentation thing either. I mean, ideally it would never come up but that’s unfortunately not how knowledge and medicines work.
I guess this is how leftist react when they really don’t want to admit flaws in their preferred system.
Personally, I am a big fan of medical experimentation. If I came down with something horrible I would jump up and down “Guinea pig! Right here! No prior treatment to compromise your experimental results!” Would I hope? Sure, but my real hope is in Jesus.

If you fancy yourself as a tutor to the unlettered, you do that. If the archives are still around, you might have a look at Todd Flowerday’s (“Catholic Sensibility”) commentary on Terry Schiavo’s family. Mr. Flowerday, a graduate of Bp. Kearney High School and quondam employee of St. Bernard’s Institute in Rochester, has been for some time on the payroll of a parish in the diocese of Kansas City (as a music director). Another of his gems of wisdom was to defend the dregs of an order of women religious in California who had vengefully expelled one of their students from their high schools. Her offense was, in conjunction with her mother, having tipped off the diocesan bishop that the school had hired a gruesome Planned Parenthood agitator as an art teacher. Now, honestly, why would you attempt to defend that? Well, you establish your specialness by taking perverse positions and talking down to people.
