Assessing the conduct of Cdl Law and others over the period running from 1982 to 2001, one wag said that it appeared what the bishops actually believed in was…psychiatry.

There are in this country 575,000 counselors, 70,000 clinical psychologists, and 25,000 psychiatrists. They manage to earn a living at it. What share of their ‘clients’ actually benefit from their ‘services’ is another matter. How many could make rent from what they do absent 3d party payments and government salaries is amusing to contemplate. What share of them has a categorical objection to genital mutilation and hormone ‘treatments’ done for no other reason than to please sexual fetishists (and financed with 3d party payments, natch) would be interesting to know. Of course, in this day and age, some of the objections remain unstated due to abuse and intimidation by hospital administrators.

I love the idea that there is stigma about mental health, as if we’re living in the 1800s. Almost everything is mental health today. And it’s worth noting that the more we pour into mental health, the worse our mental health seems to be getting. Yet the solution is always invest more. We put a billion into it and it’s worse than ever, so let’s put two billion into it, that should do the trick.
