“No soldier..”.. the efforts of some to downplay slavery as the cause of the war.. are only surpassed by leftists who pretend that the inhuman practice in the US magically ended on June 19 1865.

There were also men of color serving in the Confederate forces. I haven’t seen the stats on the numbers of freedmen and slaves. A friend of mine in S.C. said that her great, great, great grandfather during the war had his man servant with him.

General Robert E. Lee proposed having black soldiers that would be paid and freed, but the Confederate government in Richmond was not interested.

On the Northern Neck of Virginia the First Emancipator, Robert Carter III freed his slaves over a period of time. He insisted that before manumission his slaves were literate, and had a trade. They received land or were paid if they stayed on his properties. The First Emancipator is an interesting
account of his life.
