Prior to the car Shank’s mare was our main mode of transport, and bicycles when my brother and I grew old enough to ride them, one of our household tasks being to run errands and pick up items at grocery stores at a very young age. A different world back then and in some ways, especially for kids, a better one.

Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
My family had one for the longest time through the 80’s and mid-90’s. Briefly we had a second (borrowed) car in 1988 so my mother could get to her weekly doctor’s appointments when pregnant with my brother. I think it was 1996 before we had a second car permanently.
One. My mom didn’t drive until I was in elementary school.
Grew up in suburbia, with two parents working. Two jobs, two cars.
Besides, in suburbia you can’t get to a store, library, park, or school on foot.
One sedan for the longest time. My dad could ride the bus to the Pentagon for work, so no need for an extra vehicle.
