Not quite sure what the issue is here. Doesn’t virtue help any leader (hereditary or elected) avoid tyranny and don’t corruption and avarice push him that way? That advice is neither 13th nor 21st century: it’s classical and Biblical.
It’s ahistoric in the way Ed uses it as an attempted jab at Trump. Compared to most of the rulers of the time of Thomas Aquinas, Trump is a pussycat and about as far from being a tyrant as it is possible to be.
