Thought for the Day
- Donald R. McClarey
Donald R. McClarey
Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
I’m not a lawyer, but several years ago I bought a copy of Scalia Dissents, a collection of his dissenting opinions in several Supreme Court cases. I’d heard he was an excellent writer (and he was, bless him), but even so I’d feared his dissenting opinions would be mostly dry legalese. Not so, I’m happy to report— direct, some surprising metaphors, and a sharp wit that reminded me of Lincoln’s.
He is deeply missed.
I’ll never forget the opening of his son’s homily at the funeral mass. I was humbled for thinking he was talking about his dad. I could only imagine the shock it caused many attendees knowing the political scene in 2016.

You can read Scalia’s opinions with pleasure. Most judicial opinions are to be endured and not to be enjoyed.
Robert Bork also wrote well.
