The best hope for reform in the Islamic world lies in those countries with a civilized culture that predates and transcends Islam and that could (in theory) reject it and return to older civilized roots: Persia, Egypt, the Indian subcontinent. Islam arose in the semi-barbarism of central Arabia and needs no civilization to sustain itself (unlike other world religions), but rather parasitizes and in the end destroys the civilizations it conquers (as Churchill wisely perceived). I knew many civilized Persians in college and as students (including Prince Reza’s wife) and wish them well, but it will be a hard fight.
The world would be better off with a Persia in which Islam is followed either casually or cosmetically.
Faithful adherence to Islam does no good for the follower or the world.
