It would be in the best interest of the entire western hemisphere were there to be a peaceful transition of power (with military backing) to President Elect Machado. It’s not difficult to envision the entire region falling into warlordism.
Maduro is a start. The source of the problems in Latin America are twofold. One of them is the cartels. The other is extreme left wing political and the source of that is Cuba.
JFK signed an agreement not to invade Cuba and the US has honored that. Meanwhile the Chicoms have assimilated Tibet as if they were the Borg and Putin repudiated his signed agreement to respect the borders of Ukraine.
Cuba has functioned as a spy base on the US for the USSR, for Russia, for China and for Iran. All three have tentacles in Venezuela.
Trump is going to reestablish the Monroe Doctrine. About damn time. This isn’t endless war in the Middle East or another Vietnam. This is our backyard and Latin America will export its problems into the US until those problems are solved by stable Republican governments that protect private property and individual rights, cut out endemic corruption and foster an environment for economic growth.
The Colombian people will take care of the lunatic Petro next year. Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina have leaders who are pro free market and want to work with Trump. El Salvador has significantly cracked down on crime and is safer than ever.
This leaves the basket case that is Haiti, the Mexican and Colombian cartels, Ortega and the lunacy that is Brazil. A new administration in Colombia and Trump could reinstate Plan Colombia, started when Clinton was president and was uniquely successful. Either Shienbaum deals with the cartels or the US military will make them extinct. Ortega is a cockroach. My wife has good friends from Nicaragua who relocated to Naples, FL with firsthand knowledge what a dictator Ortega really is.
