The damage that Bernardin’s “Constant Ethic of Life” has done over the years, and the lives it cost, is inestimable. Cardinal Cupich is a piece of work; Archbishop Weisenburger is his spiritual twin. Pope Francis, the pope that keeps giving.

Don, Don’t mean to appear pedantic, but doesn’t your spell checker say. Qupich? Not to worry. God knows when He’s calling him to his eternal ……Guy, Texas

  • Bishop Thomas Paprocki: The Bishop of Springfield, where Durbin officially resides, has been the most vocal critic. He expressed shock at the decision and urged Cupich to reconsider, stating it “sows confusion about the seriousness of abortion and the integrity of Catholic witness in public life”. Paprocki has also prohibited Durbin from receiving Communion in his diocese since 2004 due to his stance on abortion.
  • Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone: The Archbishop of San Francisco expressed solidarity with Bishop Paprocki in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). He called the award a “grave evil that is the taking of innocent human life” and said it risks both “clarity and unity” within the Church.
  • Pro-life groups: Organizations such as Illinois Right to Life have also condemned the move and are planning a protest at the November 3 fundraiser where the award is to be presented.

Will Pope Leo of Chicago weigh in?
(I am very sorry to say that I will not be holding my breath..)

We get to pick our own bishops? Great! I pick St. Chrysostom!

“Why sow where the ground makes it its care to destroy the fruit?—where there are many efforts at abortion?—where there is murder before the birth? For even the harlot you do not let continue a mere harlot, but make her a murderess also. You see how drunkenness leads to prostitution, prostitution to adultery, adultery to murder; or rather to a something even worse than murder. For I have no name to give it, since it does not take off the thing born, but prevents its being born. Why then do thou abuse the gift of God, and fight with his laws, and follow after what is a curse as if a blessing, and make the chamber of procreation a chamber for murder, and arm the woman that was given for childbearing unto slaughter? For with a view to drawing more money by being agreeable and an object of longing to her lovers, even this she is not backward to do, so heaping upon thy head a great pile of fire. For even if the daring deed be hers, yet the causing of it is thine

~ John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople

CAG-

Thank you for the quote.

In 30 years of being against abortion, I have never heard it.

This should be included in every homily that dares to send off the annual march for life.

In a fully functional church, Cupich would be one of those cranky laymen that your parish priest regards as a small cross to carry.

In a half functional church, he’d have been a lifelong associate pastor who now fills in occasionally in retirement.

In ours, he is a cardinal archbishop.

Cupich has had to submit his resignation. A little turd deposited on the carpet on his way out the door.

We can thank retired Donald Cardinal Wuerl for depositing Cupich in Chicago, or so I read years ago. Cupich has been rotten towards the ICKSP…forbidding them to celebrate the TLM in “his” diocese.

Durbin is a slimy pol.

I wonder when, if ever, Pope Leo will accept Cupich’s resignation?

St Chrysostom remarks not just for priests homilies, it out to be taught in religion class in the high schools. I would have written for “all males high schools” but the females should read his remarks too.
I amazed how these modern day teens and women go out in public wearing tight and see through clothes.

While we’re at it, just what did he achieve? He’s been on the payroll of the United States Congress since 1982. When he had a law practice in Springfield, he was under contract to a committee of the legislature and to a statehouse office. Some portion of his income has come from state or federal appropriations since 1969. He’s a high achieving…remora.
