Requiescat In Pace: Robert Redford

Robert Redford is dead at the age of 89.  The ending of an era, or almost the ending of an era, of the actors and actresses who came to stardom in the sixties.  Redford was a very good actor, and like most very good actors he made it seem effortless and natural.

Like most actors of his generation he was a liberal, but not always, sometimes surprising with his views and the politicians he supported, and some of his films gave an ironic twist to the liberalism dominant in Hollywood.

And he made a realistic officer in one of his few war films:

After an actor passes, the main secular thing that remains behind them, other than their kids, Redford had four of them, is their body of work, and I think Redford could take pride in that.  I hope God has mercy on his soul.

I saw one of his films, part of another, a 1963 television episode in which he appeared as a featured character, and a film he directed. I’d recommend the latter two. He was seldom if ever obnoxious as a public figure. There is one thing he did a decade ago to which I’d object, and that’s to accept a lead role in a film directed by James Vanderbilt (Anderson Cooper’s second-cousin-once-removed). The film was an attempt to salvage the justly ruined reputations of Mary Mapes and Dan Rather.

He had the unhappy experience of outliving two of his children.

Yes…may he rest in Peace.

Jeremiah Johnson was one of my favorite characters played by Redford. I hope he finds peace.
